And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me. And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. Luke 12:13-21
This is one of the common narrative in the bible. The story of the rich fool. This teaching was given by Jesus Christ in response to prayer by a brother in the company of those following Him. The prayer was that Jesus should command his brother to divide inheritance and give him portion he deserved. Ordinarily this should have been a right prayer. But attitude and the state of our mind matters a lot before God.
What was his motive following Jesus Christ? Simply for him to be able to access worldly inheritance. He knew Jesus have all authorities in heaven and on earth. He knew whatsoever he ask in Jesu's name will be done by God. He knew at the name of Jesus Christ every knees must bow and every tongues confess that Jesus is the Lord. But Jesus also know that he is one of those who followed Him for the earthly benefit they can get. He belongs to generation of those who when prosperity is involved, salvation doesn't mean anything to them. He only followed Christ because he wanted to be rich in this world like his brother. What a disappointing moment for him when Jesus replied with this story of rich fool.
Unfortunately today, Many are on the same part. Following Jesus for earthly treasure and benefits. Many are in services and place of prayers just because they knew Jesus Christ has all authority to meet needs. Some are following prophets and spiritual leaders everywhere just because they need money, power, marriage, healing, children and all kinds of material things. The moment those needs are meet. They become entirely different human. They become god to themselves. God out of love for many of His followers had delay this kind of inheritance from coming to them. Riches with eternal sorrow.
Some had cut corners. Do bribery, steal, forgery and immorality etc to become rich. Such people like the rich fool will never acknowledge God in whatever they are doing or worship him with what they have. Many supposed children of God are on the part of this foolish wealth. In fact you are enemy of their prosperity if by chance you counsel them against doing evil to become rich. How many of us today can sacrifice riches for our salvation if we are put on the spot. Don't we compromise everyday just to make some money. How many rich Christians have suddenly become arrogant immediately they have access to wealth.
God may not ask for your soul tonight. But do you know that Satan is already in control of such life. Riches in itself is not wrong. After all God gives power to make wealth. But there is divine principle for wealth making. You must be rich toward God before you use power to make earthly riches. The most dangerous thing any man can do to himself is to follow after riches without following after righteousness. Many Christians because of deceptive gospel of prosperity coupled with social insecurity have exchanged their souls for foolish wealth.
How can someone be following Jesus Christ and major priority of his life is earthly inheritance. When scripture said the life of a man is not consists of the abundance he has, but that he know the Lord. How can 90% or more of a true believer's time on prayer altar be about how to gather earthly treasure. How many of us are spending hours on our knees for things of eternal value. How many of us are truly not arrogant with our social status. We should truly ask ourselves if our Christian experience whereby everybody is focus on what we can get from God rather than what He want from us is the true Christianity. Here I am send me, Speak Lord your servant is listening, what will you have me do Lord are all response from Bible generation believers. But ours are Prayers for money, material prosperities and in fact prayer against anyone (suppose enemy of our prosperity) who counsel us to seek heaven first.
Brethren, Let's ask ourselves again what's the state of our souls. Check how much damage making money had done to your relationship with God. Check the motive behind climbing that prayer mountain. Apostle Ayo Babalola climbed several mountains in Nigeria to seek relationship with God. Many Christians in the same country today are on those mountains with wrong motives. Money, material blessings, one earthly demand or the other. Mountain where someone soul meshed with God. Others souls are meshed to worldly inheritance. What is my prayer life about. Is it about knowledge of God or foolish earthly satisfaction. If we make enjoying this world our priority, we are of all men the most miserable.
What is my pursuit, what is your pursuit brethren? Is it foolish wealth or our souls in eternal rest in heaven. Be sincere to yourself as you answer this question.Turn back to God before you become the current reigning champion among the rich fools.
