Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it? When Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured at it, he said unto them, Doth this offend you? What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before? It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. And we believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus answered them, Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil? John 6:60-70 KJV
Jesus was in the mist of disciples teaching truth about himself and exposing mystery of the kingdom to them. Unknown to them every thought and imagination of men are plain before God. They begin to complained, murmured and expressed how difficult it is to follow God's word. One would have assumed they have questions that needed further clarification from Jesus. But Jesu's response to their action showed they are just with him but not true disciples.
Same situation is applicable in most our gathering today. Many are constantly present where gospel are shared. Attended church meeting upon meetings but they never are true disciples. For such people, they are comfortable when you constantly speak what they want to hear. They become angry when you tell them what God want them to hear. Jesus was sharing truth that has potential to separate godly from ungodly.
In our assembly today where there are mixed multitude. We must like Jesus deliberately speak the word of God that will cause a clear different between saints and the wolves in sheep clothing.
Gospel still have same potency as it was in the days of Jesus if we genuinely speak mystery of the word. A gospel that will not offend a sinner who is unrepentant is not truth enough. A gospel that cannot exposed leaders who portrayed themselves like the favourite of Jesus but yet they are instruments of devil. Such gospel need more fire. Judas was exposed when Jesus speaks light into those following him. Darkness has no hidden place where there is full strength of light. Many of our Christian gathering harboured demon possessed members, workers and pastors just because the word of light is scarce as in the day of Prophet Eli. No one who doubt the power of Gospel was able to stay after Jesus finished his sermon. But they are comfortable in our time because we've turn comedians on the altar. When men of the flesh are exposed to the things of the Spirit. Bible call it foolishness unto them because they cannot understand. That was why Jesus told them that gospel is spiritual and it is only meant for illumination and empowerment of lively souls.
A life that operates in the flesh cannot capture the depth of true gospel. If professed Christian is evidently a sinner under our leadership, it is simply because we've not engage the power of gospel. We only preach to fuel their fleshly desires. The word of God has potential to gradually depopulate the church until it remains the few who will later turn their world upside down. Jesus trimmed the multitude to 12 disciples who later changed the whole world. Many will think Jesus was losing relevance or His church members then. But He knew you can only built a firm foundation with perfect saints. Many men of God are afraid to speak the gospel because of fear of losing the church members. What an error. For any ministry to succeed the leader must first sieve the seed from the shaft. There must be no desire for mixed multitude.
The case of Judas was the most pathetic of all. As at this time Jesus already knew that was among the murmurer who left. But he was strong headed resistance to gospel until he finally destroyed himself. The most dangerous set of men are those who continuously hear the truth but ignored it and keep committing atrocities. The scripture say that for such, there is no other sacrifice again for them. In other words they are wasting or have wasted grace of God upon their lives. These group of people are common among the church leaders today. May God show mercy.
Brethren! The wisdom of gospel is that even if it make us uncomfortable like Peter and other disciples. Our response should be "Lord you have the word of eternal salvation. To whom shall we go?". Job said even though God slain him that he will still praise God. This is the pure heart reception of gospel. No matter what He tell us to do we must just be obedient. We must constantly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the son of God and that His words are yes and amen. This we must also let others know and by doing so those who are ungodly will run away from the fold and the godly will enjoy empowerment and eternal rest.
We must like Jesus speak the gospel of power. It may make us unacceptable, unpopular at first. But the few genuine disciples we raise will eventually turn the world around for good. Remember the purpose of gospel is to breakdown before rebuild, reduce before increase, separate shaft from seeds, differentiate sheep from goats and lastly the saints from sinners. May God help us to remain with Jesus Christ genuinely and not as Judas Iscariot did. Amen
